On the evening of 29 December, 16-12 months-outdated Murray Dowey was with his spouse and children in their house in Dunblane, Scotland. As they sat together watching Tv set, Murray talked about preserving up money for a summertime getaway with his buddies.
At about 9.30pm, he went up to his bedroom.
“That was the last time I noticed him alive,” suggests Ros Dowey, Murray’s mom.
That night time, he was qualified by a sextortion scammer, and took his very own daily life.
“He was duped into imagining he was conversing to a young lady and shared an personal picture with her,” Ros tells the Guardian’s Scotland correspondent, Libby Brooks. “As shortly as he did that, it became pretty apparent it was not a young lady he was talking to, it was criminals in Nigeria who straight away started to extort [him] … and threatening to share the photograph with all his contacts.”
Murray’s mother and father, Ros and Mark, are now increasing consciousness of the crime, in which young gentlemen are generally qualified. They argue that more demands to be done by social media companies to shield young adults like Murray.
“We’ve spoken tons about the potential risks of social media and I’ve constantly warned that you never know who you’re talking to,” Ros says. “So we’d experienced those people chats. It is not like we didn’t converse, we had been a incredibly open up relatives.
“That’s the most difficult issue to offer with, he did not just arrive as a result of. But having seemed into the concern of sextortion, the scammers are relentless … they just get the kids into these kinds of a frenzied stress.”
